'Blue' as a chick show?

Philadelphia Daily News - January 11, 2000

If you think of cop shows as guy magnets, it may surprise you to learn that roughly 1.5 million more women than men watched "NYPD Blue" last season.

On the other hand, more women than men watched "Dateline NBC," too. Not only do women outnumber men in the general population, but on average, they watch television for nearly a half-hour more each day.

"NYPD Blue" does face a woman problem this season, and her name is Amy. CBS's "Judging Amy," the top-rated new drama of the season, is drawing nearly 14.8 million viewers a week, only slightly more than the 14.6 million "Blue" attracted last season. But it's pulling in 1.7 million more women and now ranks seventh in prime time among women 18 and older. The ABC drama ranked 18th.

ABC's "Once and Again," which until recently occupied the "NYPD Blue" time slot, has averaged 3.5 million fewer viewers than "Blue." It's also attracted about 800,000 fewer women. Yet women make up 59 percent of the show's audience, compared to 51 percent for "NYPD Blue" last season.
