The critics did judge Amy (harshly), but the freshman drama, which chronicles the travails of a single divorced mom struggling to get out from under her mother's weighty reputation - in court - outperformed all expectations and became the highest-rated new drama on television, bringing in 15.5 million viewers a week by the middle of the fall season.
