Fox Presents "TV Guide Awards"
UltimateTV - February 9, 2000
More than one-and-a-half million TV fans have cast their ballots and the finalists have been tallied for the second
annual TV GUIDE AWARDS.' Finalists were announced today by Jane Leeves of last year's TV GUIDE AWARDS' Favorite
Comedy Series winner, "Frasier." Winners will be revealed during the live broadcast Sunday, March 5
(8:00-10:00 PM ET/live, PT/tape) on FOX.
For the second consecutive year, TV GUIDE had an overwhelming response, with over 1,500,000 television fans
participating in the voting. Ballots were available exclusively in two January issues of TV GUIDE magazine, with
eight additional categories available exclusively online at www.tvguide.com and one more category on AOL Keyword:
TVGUIDE.
TV GUIDE's voting provided television fans across America an opportunity to choose their favorite shows and stars in
23 categories, representing the same wide range of television programming that TV GUIDE magazine, TV GUIDE Channel,
and TV GUIDE Online cover year-round. "We are gratified by the overwhelming response we have received to our
call for voting," said Janice Kaplan, Executive Producer, TV GUIDE Television. "No other awards show can
boast this kind of fan participation."
In addition to the magazine ballot and online-exclusive categories, two TV GUIDE Editors' Choice Awards will be
presented during the live broadcast. One of these is "The Best Show You're Not Watching," to recognize a
series that TV GUIDE's editors deem deserving of a broader audience; the other honors an individual whose unique
contribution to television has helped reshape what we watch.
Webcast
For the first time ever, the second annual TV GUIDE AWARDS will be webcast on TV Guide Online (www.tvguide.com). The
webcast will complement access to celebrities in the broadcast by adding in previously unseen information, visual
detail and behind-the-scenes happenings. The TV GUIDE AWARDS webcast will feature three cameras from a variety of
backstage locations, including one in the broadcast truck, one recording the action in the press oom and one picking
up action from the stage manager. Some webcast segments may be used during the FOX broadcast.
The webcast will be produced in tandem with the awards show, as producer Don Mischer will handle both the on-air and
the webcast production.
"The simultaneous production of the on-air broadcast and the webcast offers a unique challenge," said Don
Mischer, President of Don Mischer Productions and Mischer Enterprises, Inc. "The key, and our goal, is to
integrate audiences without taking away one from the other. We are producing two different shows from the same event
it really is very exciting."
"The dual production of the on-air broadcast and webcast will provide a seamless online and viewing experience,
and truly represents the convergence of television and the Internet," said Tom Hagopian, President of TV Guide
Online. Voting Results
CBS' "Judging Amy" garnered the most recognition for one show, with placement as a finalist for
Favorite New Series and Favorite Actor in a New Series (Dan Futterman), as well as two placements for Favorite
Actress in a New Series (Amy Brenneman and Tyne Daly). Last year's comedy winner, "Frasier," is a finalist
in two categories this year: Favorite Comedy Series and Favorite Actor in a Comedy (David Hyde Pierce). NBC leads
with the greatest number of nominations from one network, with a total of 20.
In a new category to this year's TV GUIDE AWARDS, Favorite Game Show, ABC's "Who Wants to Be a
Millionaire?" is the only new show of its kind to place as a finalist; it ranks with TV fans among veteran game
shows "Jeopardy!," "Wheel of Fortune" and "Hollywood Squares."
The top four finalists are listed in each category and featured in the upcoming (Feb. 19) issue of TV GUIDE, on
