The 2000 TV Guide Awards (Excerpt)

TV Guide - March 4 - 10, 2000

BY JENNIFER GRAHAM

You cast your votes — more than 1.5 million of them. Now tune in Sunday to see if your FAVORITES GET THE GOLD.

Mark your calendars, TV Guide readers. In less than a week, you’ll find out which of your favorite stars and shows won top honors at the second annual TV Guide Awards show. An unprecedented number of you exercised your right to vote — 300,000 more than last year — cementing this ceremony’s place as the largest fan-driven awards show on TV.

One clear favorite this year is CBS’s Judging Amy, winning four nominations, including Favorite New Series. Viewers also honored NBC with the most nominations for a network — a total of 20. (For a complete list of finalists, see TV Guide listings.) And more than 1,000 readers participated in what will arguably be one of the night’s highlights: the search for "America’s No. 1 TV Fan" contest. To qualify, each entrant submitted a videotape. "One woman sent a tape in showing that she uses six VCRs to tape programs simultaneously," says executive producer Don Mischer, who’s onboard for a second year. The winner will be flown to Los Angeles to take part in the extravaganza on-air, and some of the choicest videos will be shown throughout the two-hour broadcast, which will again be held on the 20th Century Fox lot in L.A. TV Guide’s trademark Cheers and Jeers column will also be back — this time with Whose Line Is It Anyway? stars Wayne Brady and Greg Proops handing out these two distinctions throughout the ceremony.

New this year is the accompanying Webcast. TV Guide Online and Mischer have arranged a virtual all-access pass for Web users, stationing cameras backstage in the red carpet arrival area, the producer’s section and the press room. Big names scheduled to appear on both your TV and your computer screen include David Boreanaz (Angel), Roma Downey (Touched by an Angel), Jenna Elfman (Dharma & Greg), David James Elliott (JAG), Scott Foley (Felicity), Vivica A. Fox (City of Angels), Melina Kanakaredes (Providence), Alex Kingston (ER), Jay Leno, Meredith Monroe (Dawson’s Creek), Frankie Muniz (Malcolm in the Middle), Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Andrea Thompson (NYPD Blue) and Kelli Williams (The Practice).

And how do the stars feel about their nominations? "I was exceedingly surprised," says The West Wing’s Martin Sheen, nominated for Favorite Actor in a New Series, "and equally pleased." Judging Amy’s Amy Brenneman, nominated in the Favorite Actress in a New Series category, says, "It means so much because this is from the people who actually watch the show, and other TV as well. So they can compare, and they know what they’re talking about." Will Brenneman get a chance to thank her fans from the stage? You’ll have to tune in to find out.
