There will be a double dose of Daly on CBS this fall. Tyne Daly
returns for a second season of "Judging Amy" and her younger
brother Tim Daly stars in a remake of the classic chase series "The
Fugitive."
Fresh from playing former San Francisco activist Harvey Milk in
Showtime's movie "Execution of Justice," Tim Daly revives the
doctor-on-the-run role that David Janssen made famous more
than 30 years ago in "The Fugitive." The series will air Fridays at 8
p.m.
Daly described the series as a "remarkable concept" for TV
because "it is a cop show, a doctor show, it has two chases ... and
an attorney." The series revolves around an innocent doctor who is
trying to outrun a murder rap while searching for his wife's real
killer.
Roy Huggins, creator of the original series, dispelled the long-time
belief that it was based on a 1954 murder involving Dr. Sam
Shepard.
"In 1960, I came up with 'The Fugitive' and had the concept in
order, except for one thing: What did he do for a living before he
got into this terrible mess?", Huggins said. "I decided that at the
time, everyone liked doctors" and as a doctor, the leading man
would have to risk being caught in order to save lives of people in
danger that he encounters in his flight from the law.
Big sis Tyne Daly, who plays "Judging Amy" star Amy
Brenneman's mom, Maxine Gray, in the series, says she would like
to see the legal drama get more political.
"I would like to tell the story of how the women got the vote in this
country," Daly said. "I would like to tell the story of Mother Jones,
who radicalized the unions, and fascinating women who had real
lives, who seem to me very appropriate for television.
"But, what television prefers to do is pick the bones of poor, old,
dead Marilyn Monroe again, you know, recycle stuff."
The series airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m.
