The Classic Ms. Daly
CBS - October 9, 2000
NEW YORK -- Tyne Daly is one of
the entertainment industry's most
acclaimed and respected actors.
Nominated for nine career Emmy's,
winner of five, as well as many other
awards, she can now be seen heading
up a trio of strong women on the
acclaimed CBS series Judging Amy,
now in its second season. She visited
The Early Show Monday to discuss
her career, the family business, and
what's in store for her show this fall.
In Judging Amy, Daly plays Maxine Gray, the mother of Judge Amy
Gray, and herself a retired social worker. The title character is played
by Amy Brenneman, who created and co-produces the show, basing
it on her own mother, once a judge in Hartford Conn.
Judging Amy will premiere its second season on Tuesday, Oct. 10,
beginning at 10:00 PM, ET/PT.
FAST FACTS ABOUT TYNE DALY
Born in Madison, Wis. on Feb. 21, 1964.
Daly attended the American Academy of Dramatic Art in
New York, then began working on stage and appearing in
TV guest spots beginning in the early '70s.
Daly's 'big break' came in 1981 with the pilot for Cagney
and Lacey, co-starring Loretta Swit. The cop drama was
the story of two policewomen who juggled home life with
the demands of the police force. Her realistic portrayal
of Mary Beth Lacey earned her praise from real-life law
enforcement officials. The show was cancelled in 1983,
but brought back to the air a year later thanks to a
viewers' letter-writing campaign. Daly won four Emmy's
for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series" for her
role on the long-running CBS show.
She won a fifth Emmy in 1995-6 for her supporting role
(co-starring opposite Kellie Martin) in the short-lived
series Christy.
Daly won a Tony award in 1990 for lead actress in a
musical, playing Mama Rose in Gypsy.
Showing her theatre roots, in 1995 she appeared in a
supporting role in the TV-movie remake of Bye, Bye
Birdie.
Brother Tim Daly also has a CBS series, The Fugitive,
premiering Friday, Oct. 6 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on CBS.
Tyne Daly and Tim Daly are the first brother and sister in
television history to star in separate series on the same
network in the same season. Their father, James Daly,
also headlined CBS's classic Medical Center from 1969 to
1976.
Tyne Daly now lives in Los Angeles. She is divorced, and
has three daughters.
