Welling flies with 'Smallville' (Excerpt)

Hollywood Reporter - January 22, 2001

The networks are stepping up the casting of their new series for next fall in a race to beat the clock and have as many original episodes in the can as possible before the anticipated writers and actors strikes. Newcomer Tom Welling will topline the WB's new Superman series "Smallville," while New York actress Mary Louise Wilson ("Stepmom") has joined the cast of the new Glenn Gordon Caron series "When I Grow Up" for Fox. Welling will portray the superhero at age 15 in the Warner Bros. TV and Tollin/Robbins Prods. drama, which has received a 13-episode order. Wilson will play the feisty outspoken owner of the detective company in the center of the Paramount Network TV/Picturemaker Prods. series, which also has a 13-episode commitment.
