Welling flies with 'Smallville' (Excerpt)

The networks are stepping up the casting of their new series for next fall
in a race to beat the clock and have as many original episodes in the can as
possible before the anticipated writers and actors strikes. Newcomer Tom
Welling will topline the WB's new Superman series "Smallville," while New
York actress Mary Louise Wilson ("Stepmom") has joined the cast of the new
Glenn Gordon Caron series "When I Grow Up" for Fox. Welling will portray
the superhero at age 15 in the Warner Bros. TV and Tollin/Robbins Prods.
drama, which has received a 13-episode order. Wilson will play the feisty
outspoken owner of the detective company in the center of the Paramount
Network TV/Picturemaker Prods. series, which also has a 13-episode
commitment.
