Fall TV Preview: Rookies of the year (Excerpt)

Minneapolis Star Tribune - September 12, 1999

By Neal Justin, Staff Writer

After two seasons of lackluster pilots, the networks have finally recruited a future all-star team of lawyers, guns and mothers.

TUESDAY

Star to watch: Tyne Daly

The show: "Judging Amy."

Where you've seen her: "Cagney & Lacey."

Why we love her: Quite frankly, we're scared not to.

She'll remind you of: Shirley MacLaine in "Terms of Endearment."

Amazing fact: She's won five Emmys ("Cagney," "Christy") and a Tony ("Gypsy"). It's a good thing her latest show also ends with a "y".

On aging: "Everybody thinks their 20s is great. I think they suck. When you get to your 30s, you're just starting to sort it all out."

"Judging Amy": Amy Brenneman ("NYPD Blue") trades in her blues for black in this witty, warm drama about a single mother who goes back home to Hartford, Conn., to become a juvenile-court judge. The cases are easy compared to dealing with her mother (Tyne Daly), who doles out snappy advice. ("Pee before you take the bench. Never use perfume, and always make sure there's no food between your teeth.' ') Those who expect courtroom dramas to be packed with "L.A. Law' ' antics will most certainly nod off, but the subtle, smart dialogue and nonthreatening tone makes this the closest thing to a solid family hour in the new season. (9 p.m., WCCO-Ch. 4; starts Sept. 21; preview at 7 p.m. Sept. 19) Four stars.
