Judging Amy
Mr. Showbiz - September 17, 1999
CHANCES OF SURVIVAL: 5 out of 10
CONCEPT: A goodhearted single mother (Amy Brenneman) ditches her demanding career as a New York City attorney to take a seat on the judicial bench in Hartford, Conn. To smooth her transition, she
moves back in with her crusty ex-judge mother (Tyne Daly), who is given to spouting off unwanted but sage opinions.
CRITIQUE: This superbly acted but slow-paced coming-home drama has a similar feel to NBC's surprise hit Providence, and even takes place in a seldom-represented New England city. Languid pacing
aside, Judging Amy — which is based on the real-life story of Brenneman's own mother — should appeal to people who prefer pleasant, character-driven storytelling to jittery NYPD Blue-style
action. One qualm: Couldn't Brenneman have fictionalized the series a tad by calling it Judging Matilda or something?
