Courtside With Amy

San Francisco Chronicle - September 17, 1999
By JOHN CARMAN

"Judging Amy" gets a sneak preview -- well, OK, a preview -- on CBS Sunday (8 p.m. on Channel 5). It stars Amy Brenneman ("NYPD Blue") as a single mom who comes home to Connecticut and becomes a juvenile court judge.

Tyne Daly plays her mother, a retired social worker, and Dan Futterman is cast as Brenneman's brother. The series is loosely based on the life of Brenneman's own mother.

Tune in and you can see Brenneman trying to cut through courtroom bureaucratese by saying, "I'd like to talk to the DCF about the OTC. And I'd like to talk to the DAD. The dad." That's as good as it gets. The show is predictable, inexcusably pokey and, when Daly and Brenneman bump against each other in the heavier mother-daughter slogs, dangerously close to smarmy.

After Sunday, "Judging Amy" moves to 10 p.m. Tuesdays.
