Tyne Daly Chat

AOL - September 19, 1999

AOLiveMC11: Welcome to AOL Live, Tyne Daly!

Tyne Daly: Hello.

AOLiveMC11: Tyne, let's dive right into questions from our audience.

Question: How long have you been working in the TV series?

Tyne Daly: In this particular series, we have made 6 so far, and I have worked in series on 2 other occasions: “Cagney & Lacey” 6-1/2 years, and “Christy” for 2 years.

Question: Hi, Tyne, I just wanted to let you know that I admire you. You remind me a lot of my sister. I loved you in “Cagney & Lacey” and I will be watching the movie tonight. -- Diane

Tyne Daly: Thank you, Diane.

Question: How do you like your new TV series?

Tyne Daly: So far so good. Tonight is an hour, and we begin our regular night on Tuesday. We are beginning to know each other, and now the audience can get to know us.

Question: How old where you when you first started to get into the TV industry?

Tyne Daly: Gee, in TV I became a professional actor when I was 15, but in 1967 I started TV as a freelancer. So, I was in my early 20s.

Question: What do you most love about the show? -- Bethalou

Tyne Daly: I love acting with Amy Brenneman. She's wonderfully talented and interesting. The duets we've been having on the show are fun.

Question: What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened while filming “Judging Amy”?

Tyne Daly: Let's see, the focus puller, part of the camera team, is kind of a prankster, and he asked me to pretend he stapled my finger, and I am quite suggestible and yelled very loudly and then had to explain it was a joke. I got into a lot of trouble. :-)

Question: You and Sharon Gless are my favorite actresses! Will there be another “Cagney & Lacey” movie in the future?

Tyne Daly: Barney Rosenzweig and Sharon Gless have not told me of any plans for a new “Cagney & Lacey.” Until they say it... but I'm not a producer, I'm just an actor.

Question: What do you enjoy doing more, TV or the theater?

Tyne Daly: I love the theater because I get to be in the same room with the people I am telling the story to, but I know that when I'm on TV I get to be in a lot more rooms. So it's a trade-off, because you can reach so many more people. But the theater is fun.

Question: Your other TV roles have been serious -- is this a comedy or drama?

Tyne Daly: Well, I hope it's both, but the categories are not as strict as they used to be. I think that the things that happen in life are both dramatic and funny, so I hope we have some of both.

Question: What was your favorite thing in acting that you have ever done? -- Bethalou

Tyne Daly: :::laughter::: With luck, I haven't done it yet.

Question: What was the last theater that you did, and how long did it run?

Tyne Daly: I did a one-woman show in NYC in 1997 and it was called "The Myster School" by Paul Selig. We played an 8-week run in NYC and previously played near Hartford, CT for two months.

Question: Can you tell us a bit about your new show?

Tyne Daly: It's about a young woman who is assigned a judgeship in Hartford, CT. Her marriage is falling apart, and she takes her 6-year-old daughter home to mother. I play the mother, Maxine Grey, a retired social worker.

Question: How do you like working with a 6-year-old? I hear it's kind of hard.

Tyne Daly: There's an old theater adage that says never work with dogs or children, but I've had success working with both. The young lady who plays Lauren is a very sweet little girl. So far, so good.

Question: Tyne, do you see Sharon Gless offstage?

Tyne Daly: We're good friends. And I see her not often enough. She lives in Florida now. But we send each other notes and silly presents and we talk on the phone with some regularity.

Question: In what ways are you similar (if any) to your character Maxine?

Tyne Daly: Well, I am a momma and a grandmother and I have spent a long time in my field of endeavor, but I am not retired. So I have to do research about the social work field, but I have built-in research about the mothering and grandmothering at home.

Question: Are you going to put a “special twist” on your new character to make her more interesting?

Tyne Daly: Well, the character twists are in many ways up to the writers, but I always try to find the specifics of a character. Because the more you make this individual an individual, the more universal they become. So I'm on the lookout for Maxine's habits and peculiarities that will make her someone you haven't met before. So far, I know she's bright, a little bit of a hermit, set in her ways, loving, a little lonely and funny.

Question: You should make a comedy movie because you are very funny... especially when you use that NY accent! You were so funny in “Cagney & Lacey”! Pam in Texas is your #1 fan!

Tyne Daly: Pam, I'm so glad you thought Mary Beth was funny. I thought she was funny. I kept winning prizes for drama. I can't explain this to you, but I love making people laugh. The truth makes me laugh.

Question: Where are you from?

Tyne Daly: I was born in Madison, Wisconsin. Quickly moved to NYC with my family. I did most of my growing up on the East Coast. After school, married and came west. I'm still surprised that I'm a Californian. More surprised that I have California children.

Question: How's it feel to be so successful?

Tyne Daly: Great! I'm lucky to have known and been very clear about what I wanted to do and to be able to do it. I recognize that as a privilege.

Question: What is Sharon doing now?

Tyne Daly: Sharon is married, living in Florida, and on the work front just finished doing a new play in Chicago. I think she is in Hawaii watching USC play football. She sent me a painted coconut saying ALOHA from Hawaii as an opening night gift. She always makes me smile.

Question: Since you enjoy making people laugh, why not have a real comedy developed for you? What would you like to play?

Tyne Daly: I've been approached a number of times to do a comedy and haven't found one that would hold my or my audience's interest for very long. And I like humor that comes out of human situations, rather than just telling jokes. I don't think I'm a very good joke teller.

Question: Did you attend college? If so, where?

Tyne Daly: I went to Brandeis University for one year and, like an idiot, quit. I went to NY for acting school, and I would like to go back to college and would study... in my fantasy about returning to college, I would study French, comparative religions and economics, not necessarily in that order.

AOLiveMC11: Tyne, time has flown by! We can only squeeze in one more question.

Question: What time is your new show on?

Tyne Daly: Our regular time slot is Tuesdays at 10 on CBS, but tonight we are on following “60 Minutes.” I am heading to Amy's house to see it together. From now on, when the show is on, we'll be on the set at Paramount making another. Thanks for the chat.

AOLiveMC11: Thanks for joining us in AOL Live tonight, Tyne Daly.
