Starring: Amy Brenneman, Tyne Daly, Dan Futterman

Our Grade: B

Here's the thing about Tyne Daly. You think, "Oh geez, not her again." But then you watch her act and she seldom disappoints.

Ms. Daly, who plays former judge Maxine Gray, is secondary to star Amy Brenneman (NYPD Blue), who has the title role. But she has plenty to do here, and the interplay between mother and daughter is what gives this series its snap and bite. Ms. Daly wrings every drop out of a line such as "Drink your juice before the vitamins escape."

Amy, on the receiving end, is a newly divorced single mother who' s sacked a Manhattan law practice to become a rookie judge in Hartford, Conn. Three generations of Gray women, including Amy's 6-year-old daughter, will be living under the same roof and not exactly loving every minute of it. There's also Amy's employment-impaired brother, Vincent (Dan Futterman), who seems to understand Mom a little better than his sister does.

It all blends together nicely in a textured premiere episode. CBS' traditional graying audience, and maybe a few whippersnappers, too, should find Judging Amy capable of winning on appeal.
