"Maggie Winters" didn't manage to succeed with the "Hope Floats" redux last season, but hope springs eternal at CBS, which brings us "Judging Amy," the story of a newly separated career woman and mom (Amy Brenneman) who flees the big city for her modest hometown. She bunks down at the home of her indefatigable mother (Tyne Daly) and takes a job as a judge specializing in family issues. It's hardly groundbreaking material, but it's handled with wit and sensitivity. Brenneman proves she can carry a series, Daly is reliably colorful, and Dan Futterman, as Amy's intelligent but aimless brother and her confidante in all matters, is an invaluable supporting player. Some of the best scenes come from Brenneman and Futterman just sitting around shooting the breeze.
