Judging Amy

Tonight offers another promising drama, CBS' "Judging Amy" (at 9 on Channel 13). Although not in the class of "Once and Again," it's another optimistic view for divorced moms, one with all the edges rounded off.

"Judging Amy," which premiered Sunday, continues in its regular time slot the story of Amy Gray (Amy Brenneman), who came home from the big city to midsize Hartford, Conn., to live with her mom (Tyne Daly) and to take an appointment as a family law judge. It's based in part on Brenneman's own mother, so they get a pass on whatever similarities it may have in setup -- prodigal daughter returns to midsize New England city -- to NBC's surprise hit "Providence."

Besides, there's depth in the generational relationship of mom and daughter, and in the working relationship of "baby judge" Brenneman, as she gets called, and her court services officer (Richard T. Jones).

For all it sweetness, there also are deep streaks of intelligence and complexity in this show. And maybe most importantly, these are fine people to hang around for an hour.
