Tyne Daly, Lucky Lady

TV Guide - October 18, 1999
By John Aboud

Showbiz veteran Tyne Daly has had a colorful career, but she gets a little off-color when discussing the topic of Hollywood success.

"I don't think that you can put this on your show," she chuckles to the TV Guide Channel, "but I will tell you that Sharon Gless and I had a very funny game once called 'The F---ing Lucky Show.' The premise was that you would come down — kind of like a game show — and you would be called out of the audience to answer the question 'Why are you so f---ing lucky?'"

Daly and Gless's little game show must have provided hours of old-school, catty fun on the set of Cagney & Lacey. "You fill in different actor's names, you know, 'How come you got so f---ing lucky?' The one who accounts for themselves the best wins something." But Daly has a serious point: everyone, even herself, is subject to Lady Fortune. "Many times I feel like I am the star of 'The F---ing Lucky Show.'"

Daly suddenly realizes how frank she's been and jokes that her profane philosophizing might surprise viewers. She laughs, "Betty White's saying bad words now, and that's her act, not mine."

After such a distinguished acting career, however, Daly has earned the right to be as honest as she wants — even if she doesn't know what she's being honest about. "I don't know anything about Hollywood. I've been here for about 30 to 40 years, and I know nothing about it because I never could find it. I'm not sure it really exists. I think it's sort of what you figure out to do with it. What I've figured out to do with it is play fairly real, human women — which is hard." — John Aboud
