Court drama enhances 'Judging Amy'

With a fine blend of courtroom action, office politics and family drama, "Judging Amy," CBS at 10, serves up its strongest episode to date.

Marlee Matlin deserves some credit for boosting the hour with a fine guest appearance as an activist with hearing impairment.

Nancy (Matlin) becomes stymied when a deaf child refuses to use sign language. In a series of emotionally tinged scenes, Nancy clashes with Maxine (Tyne Daly) over whether the child should live with his older brother.

In court, Amy faces a difficult decision. She must decide between white foster parents and the black biological grandmother in a custody battle.

Her decision causes her African-American court officer to give her the cold shoulder. In her own indomitable style, the family court judge deals with the prospect that she made the wrong decision.
